Farewell to one of the greats. Frank Auerbach. Who so sadly died yesterday on Remembrance Day. The irony for someone who had been sent over to Britain by his parents during the Second World War. His parents both died during the war and he never saw them again. This powerful self portrait sits on my desk. Even more extraordinary is that I just went to see Kate Giles in her studio. Unaware the artist had passed away she was perched on a stool reading ‘Frank Auerbach: The Studio’ a booklet from this year’s Frieze stand by Frankie Rossi Art Projects.

Occasionally you see a painting that causes a sharp intake of breath. I defy another artwork this decade to create as loud an exhaled WOW. Study (it’s just a study…) of Spring, Primrose Hill was painted by Frank Auerbach in 1975. The whole exhibition ‘Frank Auerbach: Portraits of London’ @offerwaterman is a marvel, tracing his London landscapes throughout his career. What’s extra nice is most of the paintings are in British museum collections. I’d exchange all four of my children AND my miniature wire haired dachshund for this one ❣️ #frankauerbach

Last chance to see this series of work! We are open today 11-4 at Delahunty, 29 Bruton St, W1. My first solo show with Kate Giles. Compass of Mind – 35 artworks – transpired from a serendipitous series of events, starting back in the misty depths of Winter, encased within the jewel-like Claude-clad Landscape Room of Holkham Hall, and culminating in the long shadows of it’s late summer, parched Palladian parkland. It has been an endless marvel unravelling the complexities of these highly technical, most dynamic of landscapes. My biggest thanks to Kate for her endless energy, inspiration and education, and my untold gratitude to Damian for having faith in us both and allowing us in to the most beautiful of spaces. @delahunty_fine_art @katesgiles 📸 @matthew_hollow_photography
